When it comes down to water garden ponds and especially fish pond keeping (normally koi or goldfish) some items of equipment are vital. Fish live in an artificial aquatic environment and would slowly poison themselves to death if pond filters were not installed into the water pumping circuit). The main reason therefore for a pond bio filter is to purify or clean the garden fish pond. On the other hand murky and green ponds are normally caused by green pond algae. This problem which is worse in warm weather, over stocked ponds and under bright sunlight conditions. Aquatic or pond plants help remove nutrients that create the food for pond algae but rarely solve green water problems entirely. All pond inhabitants need oxygen. The oxygen in pond water is distributed by pond pumps. So a fish pond pump MUST run 24 hrs per day to keep the pond filter bacteria alive. A common way to add oxygen to pond water is to install a pond waterfall ... as water cascades over the waterfall it picks up oxygen and this fresh oxygen source gets circulated through the system. Lightweight, natural looking, strong, frost and all weather resistance ibreglass water features are best. Pond water fountains also achieve the same effect so it is always a good idea to have a sprinkle type garden fountain attachment on any pond pump. Water gardens, pond keeping can vary by country and region. In South Africa where I live water gardens and pond keeping conditions are quite different
Some areas have hard water and this is generally good for fish ponds but in event of a problem consider using top up water from a water softener . Don't get confused between home or drinking water filters and pond filters. Many large koi ponds are heated during winter especially in order to maintain a growth rate for the fish .... in very cold weather koi and goldfish stop feeding (hibernate). Heating water can be very expensive and use of tankless hot water heaters in the home are finding favor.
